Art galleries – 8 tips
It is hardly a secret that there is a wealth of art to experience in Halmstad. In addition to a solid collection of public art and two major art museums, there are also several splendid galleries exhibiting both world-class international artworks and the work of local artists. Listed below are a few examples.
At the bottom of the page you can find a map showing the locations of the galleries. If you are in the mood for more art after visiting these galleries, why not take a tour of Halmstad’s two major art museums: the Halland Art Museum and Mjellby Art Museum.
You can find details of current exhibitions on the galleries’ websites and in our events calendar (Swe). At several of the galleries you can also buy works of art.
A world-class gallery with showroom situated in a refurbished warehouse in Slottsmöllan. Although the premises retain their rough edges, with concrete walls and green industrial lamps hanging from the ceiling, the walls are now adorned with magnificent fine photographic art. Run by Nette Johansson, The PhotoGallery houses a large collection of international photographic art and collaborates with artists all over the world.
The thrilling architecture of Halmstad Public Library makes it a tourist attraction in its own right, with its full-length glass facade and part of the building extending over the River Nissan, resting on thin pillars. You will find Halmstad Art Gallery (Swe) on the ground floor, where it provides a window onto the latest happenings on the contemporary art scene, both locally and nationally. Here, you have the opportunity to partake in art that engages, moves, disconcerts and makes you think.
Tres Hombres Art
Hotel Tylösand is Sweden’s largest and perhaps most renowned fine art photography gallery. Wherever you turn, sensational images by one world-class artist after another await: Anton Corbijn, Mary McCartney, Albert Watson and Mick Rock to name but a few. The Tres Hombres Art (Swe) gallery was founded in the late 1980s by Per Gessle and Lars Nordin, with the idea of filling Hotel Tylösand’s 23,000 square metres with art, thereby transforming the entire hotel into a gigantic gallery. In total, some 400 works are on display and in addition to the major collection of fine photographic art there are also paintings, sculptures and graphics by contemporary Scandinavian and international artists.
Galleri 70 (Swe) is a non-profit gallery on Skepparegatan in Söder. With over 600 square metres, the gallery offers generous exhibition spaces to local more or less well-established artists who wish to exhibit their work. Between them, Galleri 70’s two separate exhibition spaces, Hanger 70 and Hanger II, have room for around 50 artists whose work is exhibited on a more permanent basis.
Black & White Art
Black & White Art is one of Sweden’s leading galleries for art societies and private individuals, exhibiting a large selection of quality artworks. Located on Bryngelhusgatan in Öster, the gallery offers a wide range of works by local, national and international artists.
Halmstad Art & Design
Halmstad Art & Design (Swe) is a small and welcoming gallery on Brogatan in the town centre. Here you will find art in all its forms from a number of local artists. On entering, one is often greeted by an explosion of colours, shapes, styles and materials; in fact, there is generally something to suit all tastes.
Ateljé Bastaskär (Swe) is located in the picturesque seaside surroundings of Grötvik. The Walter Bengtsson Foundation, which was founded by local artist Walter Bengtsson and his wife Ullabritt in 1998, gathers some hundred sculptures, paintings and sketches by the artist. Guest artists are also invited to exhibit each year, while the gallery also regularly hosts other art exhibitions. If you are curious about the public works created by Walter Bengtsson in Halmstad, please visit our page on the artist.
Heagård konst & hantverk
You will find Heagård Arts & Crafts occupying part of the charming old stable building at Heagård. The gallery hosts both a number of artists on permanent exhibition and visiting artists wishing to share their creations.
