A Brief History of Halmstad Castle

When the castle was built in the early 1600s, Halmstad and the Halland region were still part of Denmark. King Christian IV wanted a larger, more impressive residence for his visits to Halmstad, and construction began.

The original architect, Hans van Stenwinkel the Elder, passed away in 1601 shortly after construction started. His apprentice, Willum Cornelissen, took over and completed the project.

The castle, made up of four wings around a courtyard, was finished in 1619. It was built as a pleasure palace for rest and recreation, but also served as accommodation during royal inspection visits.
