Om prins Bertil

Prince Bertil, Duke of Halland, and his wife Lilian had a summer home in Tylösand. The popular hiking trail Prins Bertils stig (Prince Bertil’s Trail) is named after him and was officially opened by Princess Lilian on May 17, 1998.

Bertil Gustaf Oscar Carl Eugen was born in February 1912 at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. He was the son of Crown Prince Gustaf (later King Gustaf VI Adolf) and Princess Margaret of Great Britain. As Duke of Halland, Prince Bertil was high in the line of succession to the Swedish throne during the time when Carl XVI Gustaf – now King of Sweden – was still a minor.

Lilian och Prins Bertil

Prince Bertil met Lilian in 1943. They were a couple for 33 years before they were finally able to marry on December 7, 1976. The long wait was due to royal rules—Prince Bertil couldn’t marry the daughter of a foreign man without the king’s permission. Doing so would have meant giving up his right to inherit the Swedish throne, something he felt he couldn’t risk at the time.

Once King Carl XVI Gustaf had taken the throne and married, Prince Bertil was finally granted permission to wed. Lilian and Bertil spent many happy summers together in their Tylösand summer home.
