City refreshments at cafés
Taking a break for refreshments is a timeless pleasure. The very word “refreshments” trips tastily off our tongues. In Halmstad, refreshments are an important part of our culture. Perhaps that is why we have so many cafés, bakeries and coffee shops with a wonderful atmosphere and unique character. Do not miss out on discovering the cafés hidden away in the city’s inner courtyards! Which will be your favourite?
In the summer, you may soon find yourself seated outdoors in the sun with a cooling iced latte. In autumn and winter, on the other hand, you can enjoy freshly brewed coffee indoors with the rain pattering on the window. Accompany us on a tour that calls in at historic coffee shops, summer cafés and places that welcome cyclists.
Historic cafés
At Storgatan 40, in an 18th century half-timbered house, you will find Skånskan, a snug café, coffee shop and chocolate-making oasis. It offers everything from hand-made pralines, sumptuous desserts and classic cinnamon buns to cakes, salads and filling baguettes. Skånskan’s ideals are: home-baked like before; best ingredients; supreme service; and, delight!
Halmstad’s oldest coffee shop is at Norra vägen 9, right opposite our beautiful Norre Katts park and near Norre port. Fribergs Konditori opened as long ago as 1923. It is a classic pearl of a coffee shop where you can enjoy tasty refreshments (with home-baked goodies) or a light lunch. Never, ever hesitate to try the specialities, Napoleonbakelserna (a Swedish version of the French millefeuille, known as napoleon in the USA) and cinnamon swirls.
In the heart of verdant Norre Katts park, with the Nissan river as its neighbour, there is the lovely Rotundan. This pavilion was built in 1865. Since then, it has been providing Halmstad with food, refreshment, entertainment and atmospheric concerts in a convivial environment. Rotundan is now run with great commitment by a non-profit association, FIKA
If you would like to combine refreshments with 400-year-old architecture, Brooktorpsgården at Kyrkogatan 12 is a must. This is one of Halmstad’s oldest buildings. Home-baked pastries, sandwiches and lunches are on the menu... and, of course, refreshments always taste even better when served in a heritage-listed, half-timbered building with a rich history.
Classic coffee shops
Konditori Regnbågen at Karl XI:s väg 37 started up in 1958. Here, you can take a refreshment break in a peaceful setting and enjoy the fantastic wood relief carving by Halmstad artist Walter Bengtsson. Oven-fresh bread, pastries, cakes and buns are served every day. Should you be a little extra peckish, there are also open sandwiches and salads.
Paulssons konditori is at Fredsgatan 8. This is a traditional coffee shop, but with wide and creative offerings. That there is so much to choose from is wonderful and, at the same time, exasperating. How can you ever know which is tastiest? One thing is certain. You will find masses of new favourites amidst all the cakes, buns and pastries.
Modern cafés
Kasten Rönnowsgatan 10 is a place of pilgrimage for residents and visitors alike. It is the home of Feldts Bröd & Konfekt. At this tiny, popular, sourdough bakery, everything is made from scratch using natural and ecological ingredients. The shop is filled with buns, bread, cordials, home-made toffees, chocolate pralines, pastries and ice creams. It is always best to come early. The newly baked goodies disappear fast!
Coffee is the star at Cortado on Norre Torg (near 91:an and Norre Port). This café wants to show what true coffee is, how it should be brewed and what it should taste like. Along with your coffee, you can enjoy ecological, local goodies – home-baked or from nearby bakeries. If you fancy something slightly more filling, light lunches are also served. Or why not start the day with a deluxe breakfast?
On Fredsgatan, you will find an entirely new ice-cream parlour, Riccardo’s. The owner is Riccardo Boggian, who also runs the famous World of Riccardo at Möllegård. Both outlets offer Italian ice cream made from first-class ingredients. Take your ice cream out into the sun or, if you prefer, settle down in the café. It tastes wonderful, whatever the weather and wherever it is eaten.
Café chains
In the city centre, the well-known Wayne’s Coffee serves KRAV-labelled (i.e. certified as organic) coffee and promotes ecological ingredients. There are two Espresso House outlets in the city, one in the slightly hidden away Queen Christina Passage and one on Storgatan. They are passionate about hot and cold drinks, pastries, sandwiches and salads.
