Tylösandsleden – The 25 kilometer local cycling trail
Explore western Halmstad, Galgberget’s leafy beech forests and Tylösand’s vast beaches. Let your imagination drift back to an enormous battle involving hundreds of Viking ships, or simply stroll around Vallgatan and its quaint, half-timbered houses.
The twin Tylösand and Laxa trails are marked with red-white signs. These trails are popular with tourists and residents alike who are keen to discover the gems in the Halmstad conurbation. The trails are “one-way” circuits. Each is around 25 kilometres long. As there are no start and end points, you can join these trails wherever you like.

Sights along the way
Norre Port (north gate) was part of the city’s fortifications. These further included Halmstad Castle and the earthworks whose remnants can be seen at Norre Katts park and Karl XI:s väg. The gate was completed in 1601 and is the only one of the original four still remaining.
The scenic Hallandsgården open-air museum has been on Galgberget in central Halmstad since 1925. It comprises old buildings collected from various parts of Halland.
Västra Kyrkogården and the St. Katarina chapel
Designed by architect Adolf Wiman of Växjö, the Saint Katarina chapel was inaugurated in 1941. According to artist Gunnar Torhamn, the three-part composition symbolises, from left to right, death, ascension and reunion.
Believed to have replaced an earlier wooden church, medieval Söndrum Church was most probably built in the 13th century. The present, cubic, stone tower was built in 1820 following the designs of master painter Peter Hallberg of Halmstad.
Trollberget is a glorious hill from which, on a sunny day, you can see all the way to the Hallandsåsen ridge and out over the Laholmsbukten bay. The hill takes its name from the troll that was popularly believed to live here. Legend also states that the troll left his footprint and a ring on the hill. Can you find them?
Tylösand is well-known for its fine sand, wonderful bathing and rolling waves. Stop a while to admire the beautiful sand dunes and enjoy a refreshing drink. Alternatively, make a detour to the rhododendron park and St. Olof’s Chapel.
The Battle of Nissan
The first time the site of the present Halmstad is mentioned in the history books is 1062. This is the date attributed to an enormous sea battle involving hundreds of Viking ships just off the mouth of the Nissan river. Harald Hårdråde, king of Norway, was victorious. Denmark’s king, Svend Estridsen, was forced to return home.
Finished in 1619, Halmstad Castle was built as a palace for King Christian IV of Denmark. However, the Danish crown was not long able to enjoy its Halmstad base. Halland became Swedish in 1645 and the castle evolved into the residence for visiting Swedish royalty.
Vallgatan is the narrow cobblestone street that, proudly showing off its quaint half-timbered buildings, gives visitors an idea of what the city looked like in the 16th century. Here and there, you can see remains of the old ramparts that ran around the city.
