Nature reserves Gushing waterfalls and overgrown airfields. Expansive swamps. Leafy deciduous forests. Steep mountain faces. Put on your hiking boots and discover a surprising side to Halmstad. Best of all: everything is nearby, so you can feel like a real adventurer, only to be back in your hammock moments later. Simlångsdalen Simlångsdalen, 17 km east of Halmstad, is an area of natural beauty, where the Fylle River forms a long and narrow series of lakes on its way to the sea. There are wonderful opportunities here to experience the great outdoors. The biggest passage grave in the Halland region, Tolarpsgraven, can be explored alongside Simlångsdalen. Not far away from here, the Fylle River flows over Tolarpsfallen (Tolarp Falls). Trönninge ängar The bird sanctuary Trönninge ängar (Trönninge Meadow) is a unique place where you can be at one with the birds without disturbing them. You don’t need to stand in a hide with strong binoculars, because bird life is all around you. Many migratory birds pass through this nationally-renowned bird watching area, and many species breed in the pastures and wetlands. There is also a platform close to the bushes and a bird watching tower with wonderful views.
Klapperstensfältet in Påarp Klapperstensfältet (Klappersten Field) in Påarp, south of Halmstad, dates from the Iron Age and is the largest of its type in the Halland region, with over 200 cairns and stone circles. Also in this beautiful agricultural region is Eldsbergaåsen (Eldsberg Ridge) with its remarkable medieval church, the oldest parts of which date from the 13th century. The church hill provides a wonderful view of southern Halland. Just north of the graveyard is the mighty boulder and bird watching area of Skäret. Danska fall Danska fall (The Danish Falls) in Eriksköp Nature Reserve are dramatic, particularly after heavy rainfall in the spring and autumn. The water drops a total of 36 metres, at the precise spot where the Danish army is said to have fallen after the battle of Fyllebro in 1676. The Danish soldiers escaped via the bridge over the falls to get away from the Swedes. What they didn’t know was that the Swedes had weakened the bridge, which broke. Several Danes fell in and drowned – hence the name The Danish Falls. |

Galgberget – Nature in the town It’s calm on Galgberget (Gallows Mountain), even if the name hints at the history of the place. Footpaths, bridle paths and jogging tracks share this area amongst beech woods and mixed forests. With views of Laholm Bay and the centre of Halmstad, it can be lovely to take a breather on one of the park benches. In the summer you can visit the open-air museum Hallandsgården – a ”mini-Skansen” – and in the café, situated in one of the old building, freshly-baked waffles are served. Be sure to also visit Utsiktstornet (Viewing Tower). |
