Cycling & walking in Halmstad

There are many excellent footpaths, cycle paths and jogging tracks in the Halmstad region. The Halmstad district alone boasts 200 km of cycle tracks. You can cycle on both sides of the road on several of the main streets. At the tourist office you will find both maps and inspiration.

Hallandsleden (The Halland trail)
One of the main lowland trails in Sweden, connecting to the Skåne trail in the south and Bohus trail in the north. In total, it is 380 km long, passing Simlångsdalen and Oskarström on the way. The countryside is varied – one moment you’re walking through a forest, only to emerge into a wide-open space with pastures and little red cottages.

The route goes along old paths. Signs everywhere give you information about ancient sites and cultures and historical buildings. At the tourist office you can buy maps of the trail containing information about food and accommodation, as well as rambling tips. The Halland route is nowadays part of the North Sea Trail, which extends around the whole of the North Sea.

Prins Bertils stig (Prince Bertil’s Path)
This coastal walk is full of experiences, starting at Halmstad Castle and going through Tylösand, later going inland and finishing in the leafy nature reserve at Möllegård. Along the way, there are small fishing bays, sandy beaches, cliffs and forests. You pass our wonderful disabled baths, the rhododendron park and several views and barbecue areas.

Prince Bertil was the Duke of Halland and he spent many weeks at his summer house in Tylösand. He was well-known for his love of sports, and together with his wife Princess Lilian, Duchess of Halland, he was often seen playing golf at Halmstad Golf Club. The long-awaited path was opened by Princess Lilian on 17th May 1998.

Prince Bertil’s Path is approximately 18 km long. If you don’t want to walk the whole way, you can always take a bus. There are buses along Nya Tylösandsvägen at least once an hour – more frequently in the summer. You can find leaflets with maps and highlights at the tourist office.

Rhododendronparken (Rhododendron Park)

A nature park with beautiful rhododendron bushes and yew trees. Bushes reaching up to 4 metres in height hide old rest places. The park was created in the mid-1930s as part of an employment scheme. The park is situated outside S:t Olofs Kapell (St Olof’s Chapel). SkedalaskogSkedalaskog (Skedala Forest) – a wonderful area for country walks - is situated ten kilometres from Halmstad, towards Simlångsdalen (route 25). There are 7 footpaths of 4-8 km, passing through different natural environments. Views for miles around give way to mountain faults, exposing vertical mountain walls. Forests of pine, spruce and birch alternate with newly-planted fir trees.

Simlångsdalen
There are several country walks and nature reserves in Simlångsdalen (Simlång Valley). To finish off your walk in the best possible way, make your way towards Danska Fall, with its drop of 36 m. Simlångsgården is an open-air estate in a beautiful natural setting by the northern tip of Gyltige Lake. There are footpaths and ski tracks here between 3 and 12 km in length.

Galgberget
Centrally located, with 70 hectares of forest, Galgberget is the “lungs” of Halmstad. There are footpaths, bridle paths and running tracks. Hallandsgården open-air museum offers outdoor eateries and a programme of entertainment. Next door is the belvedere and the beautiful Landalasjön (Landala Lake).

Ginstleden
Ginstleden (Broom Trail) follows the whole of the Halland coast – you can scarcely get closer to the sea. The trail starts at Laholmsbukten, with its extensive beaches and dunes. The further north you go, the more the landscape changes. Beaches are replaced by cliffs and before too long, the first fjord hoves into view. There are several shelters along the way, and many wonderful places to take a break in. At the side of the road you may see the bright yellow of Genista pilosa – Halland’s official flower.

Hylteslingan
Hylteslingan (Hylte Trail) starts at Nissan, one of Halland’s rivers, into the territory that once marked the border with Denmark. Travelling along Nissadalen is a genuinely wonderful experience, with wonderful views en route of the great forests and fishing lakes.

The cycle track takes you into a different Halland – to the eastern part of the region, a relatively unknown and unexplored area for many. It passes through all the river valleys, through rolling terrain in a countryside full of lakes and forests.

Banvallsleden
Banvallsleden (Banvall Trail) is about 250 km long and extends from Västerhav to Östersjö. More than half the route follows the now-defunct narrow-gauge railway lines from Halmstad to Bolmen and from Karlshamn to Bolmen. The trail was created by the Swedish Cycling Association in co-operation with the local councils along the route. It starts at Halmstad Castle, passing Nissan and follows the Fylle River through Simlångsdalen. The route continues along the beautiful lakes of Bolmen and Åsnen, follows the Mörrum River and ends at the Monument to Emigrants in Karlshamn.

It is a simple route for the walker, without hills and along embankments and minor roads. More than half of the trail is on asphalt. Stations, nature reserves and many other sights pass by as you walk through a beautifully varied countryside. There are excellent facilities along the route, with many opportunities to stay overnight. A detailed guide, full of maps and information on sightseeing en route, can be purchased from the Swedish Cycling Association (SCS) and tourist offices.
