Food in Halmstad
Halmstad is situated in one of Sweden’s richest agricultural regions. We have the world-renowned Kvibille cheese, salmon smoking-houses, large and small cured meat manufacturers, fishing, local dairies and breweries, Östra bread and an Italian ice-cream manufacturer. Wonderful raw ingredients can be obtained from the many farm shops, prepared skilfully and excitingly by Halmstad’s skilled chefs, some of whom have won prizes.

Pleasant lunch places, gourmet restaurants and cosy cafés will leave you with a good taste in your mouth. You can also pick and choose from the cuisines of several countries. Naturally, enjoying this at a pavement café, in a vibrant city, in beautiful settings outside town or on the coast, is just the icing on the cake.

Halmstad’s drinking culture
Halmstad has a rich brewing culture.

Östra Bryggeriet
In the mid-19th century, Östra Bryggeriet (Östra Brewery) was started on the banks of the Nissan River, where the library stands today. After the company was bought by Appeltofftska Bryggeriet in 1979, most of the buildings were demolished, but one building survives to this day and is currently used by the School of Culture. The park area around the brewery was often used by ”regular customers”, which is how it got its nickname of "Kapsylparken" (“Bottle-Top Park”) from locals. Kapsylparken is now a part of the library area.

Appeltofftska Bryggeri - Krönleins Bryggeri
In 1836 A.J.Appeltofft bought the half-timbered building that had previously been Stora Torg Hospital, and started Appeltofftska Bryggeri (Appeltofftska Brewery). In 1849 the brewing and storage facilities were moved to the place where the brewery still stands today. The company has been owned by the Krönlein family since 1920. In 1979 they bought their local rivals, Östra Bryggeriet AB. By 1996 the company had changed its name from Appeltofftska Bryggeri AB to Krönleins Bryggeri AB.
